Skincare Myths Debunked

May 28, 2015

Myth 1: Acne and breakouts are caused by food

It's said a lot that if you eat like crap, a week later your skin will show the damage. But in reality what causes breakouts are our hormones. Obviously eating your body weight in pizza isn't healthy but it shouldn't cause too much havoc with your skin. There is an indeed unknown link between diet and skin however it's not currently known exactly what it is, it's thought that this may be due to our hormonal changes when we're stressed causing us to reach for unhealthy foods as well as causing us to breakout around the same time.

Myth 2: Hot water/steam/anything can open or close pores

Nope. It's a common myth that washing your face with hot water will open up your pores allowing for a deeper cleanse. While this isn't entirely untrue, it works in a completely different way
Warm water can loosen the dirt and gunk making it easier to clean out. Nothing can actually change the size of your pores. If they look smaller unfortunately this means that they're just clogged up with make-up or some icky stuff. Pores are necessary, if they're closed bad things happen.

Myth 3: If you have oily skin you shouldn't go anywhere near moisturiser or your skin will become a grease pit

If you have oily skin, dry skin, combination skin or basically if you have skin at all, moisturising is good for it. Find the right one and I pinky promise your skin won't be a minefield or a grease-pit the next day. Look for an oil-free moisturisers and just keep trying things out until you find one that works. I personally find that moisturisers that are more of a gel consistency work better for my skin and I feel less greasy the next morning.

Myth 4: Face wipes are a great quick fix for skin

I'm sorry my lovelies. They're so convenient and a once in a while use isn't going to make your skin burst into flames but a proper cleanser should be used where possible. Admittedly I keep a pack for when taking my make-up off is just too much effort (*coughs* after a night out *coughs*) but other than when necessary pretty please try and use a proper cleanser! Face wipes are soaked in some pretty heavy duty stuff to kill bacteria that breed in the packs and tend to be drenched in alcohol/other nasties which dry and irritate your skin. A proper cleanse doesn't necessarily have to take forever, try using a hot cloth cleanser or a cleansing water and you'll find that once you're in the habit it takes around the same amount of time.

Myth 5: Sun cream is only necessary when it's sunny

Noooooooooooo. UV rays go through the clouds. THROUGH THEM. They don't care if there's clouds in the way at all and your skin still gets damaged (although not nearly as much) no matter what the weather.

  1. Wow - there are some pretty interesting facts in there! I won't lie - I am so lazy when it comes to skincare. I should really get on that.
