Yet another Benefit Push Up Liner Review*

September 30, 2014

Yes I know most bloggers have already reviewed this, but it's received such mixed reviews that I thought I would add mine to the mix after receiving this at the #northernbloggermeetup

I'm still kind of on the fence with this, in some ways it's amazing and in some ways it's a bit pants.

In case you've been living under a rock. The Benefit Push Up Liner is a gel liner in a pen, it's meant to be completely budge and smudge proof and makes wings and flicks 'criminally easy'.

This has been some bloggers complete eyeliner saviour. I would say I'm a pretty good at liquid and kohl eyeliner when it comes to wings so I was interested to see if it actually made it easier and if it lives up to the hefty claims made about it.

My first love about this, is that it is smudge proof, even when I swatched it on my hand it doesn't budge after a good few washes, so feel free to wear this in the rain with confidence.
I've taken some pictures which swatch a Rimmel Kohl liner (top), Makeup Revolutions Felt tip pen liner (top middle) and Makeup Revolution's liquid eyeliner (bottom middle) alongside the Benefit Push Up Liner (bottom) and took another after running water over the back of my hand. It certainly stays put and does give a really black and opaque finish. Where others would wash away with the water this kept it's line perfectly.

This does make it a bit of a pain to get off however I find using a baby wipe before washing my face does the trick. On a student budget I definitely don't have enough money to fork out for special remover.
(I did try the remover at #northernbloggermeetup and it is a fab eye makeup remover however if you don't mind splashing out a bit more.)

It's actually kind of hard to get the pen to push up eyeliner in the first place, on first use you need to twist for ages to get the eyeliner to first appear which would have confused me if I didn't have the lovely Benebabes to help me at the meet up.

It also can take a while when using for the liner to push up, it only needs one twist (or you end up with black non removable eyeliner smudged all over fingers) but it just pushes up soooooooo slooooooooooowly. (Impatient people problems).

So far so good on the whole but my biggest bug bear is that this really isn't that easy, it's definitely not criminally easy. It's okay to produce a decent flick if you know what you're doing but I would say a normal gel eyeliner with an angled brush would give you the same result. I find this really hard to line my entire eye with. Because the formula is really thick it can be difficult to apply without tugging the skin which is a no-no in the eye area, This makes it hard to line the inner bits of the eye and underneath and I found it impossible to create thin, precise and clean lines.

With all the emphasis put on the criminally easy tagline this is a bit of a let down to me.
When I do use this I use it on my flicks and then just line the rest of my eye with kohl as to me it's much easier and quicker and gives me the exact same effect.

So to sum up, this eyeliner pretty much requires a tutorial just to use it, and isn't exactly criminally easy. BUT it is very black and very waterproof, so if you're willing to spend a lot and have the patience to learn how to use it (or even the patience to wait for it to appear) then this is for you.

  2. Thank you for your thoughts on this Catherine...I'm not drawn to this and sadly, don't think I'll be picking it up anytime even though I love Benefit!
