Review - Sleek Matte Me Lip Cream

July 18, 2014

I'm normally good at making my mind up on products. But this one threw me a bit and I had to really test it out before writing this. I did a bit of research around the product before buying and other bloggers can't seem to make their minds up either.

Sleek Matte Me Lip Cream claims to be a "matte finish liquid lipstick that glides on in one smooth application, with no need for a second coat. Rioja Red is a true bright red that paired with Persian Lashes give you a true Hollywood effect. The light as air texture provides you with comfortable wear for hours, that doesn’t cake, flake or dry out, ensuring long lasting colour all day." (taken from Sleek's website) .It's £5 for a 6ml bottle which is very affordable.

I brought the shade Rioja Red and it is easily the brightest red I have owned. Think Marilyn Monroe red gone brighter and you have this. As I've been trying to get into wearing brighter colours and pushing my makeup out of it's comfort zone, this was a very good addition to my collection colour wise.
But this is definitely not for the faint hearted, if you're just starting out wearing colourful lipsticks do not start with this, it is a big slap-you-in-the-face bright red. That said, I find most reds don't suit all skin tones due to having some kind of pink or orange or bluey tone underneath somewhere. This seems to be a very true red and from what I could see from swatches is probably fairly universal in that most skin tones could pull it off.

Onwards to the formula. I've avoided lip creams/liquid lipsticks until now, because I'm not a lip gloss person in any way. I'm a lipstick girl through and through and liquid lipsticks just seemed like really pigmented lip glosses to me. So I was pleasantly surprised by how opaque and thick this was. It definitely doesn't need a second coat and I have fairly pigmented lips, I feel like the brightness of the colour may have helped in this area and it would be interesting to see how the lighter shades like Birthday Suit and Petal hold up against it.

I've only recently stepped into the world of matte lips as well, I currently only own a matte lipstick from MUR (Divine). I have really dry lips so that's my reason from shying away from putting anything matte on them. So when I gave this a test run I had dry and flaky lips and it was disastrous as I expected, matte lip products and dry flaked lips are each other's nemesis.
Second time lucky and this time I went a prepared my lips, I used a homemade lip scrub using a recipe from A Thrifty Mrs but there are so many different lip scrub recipes online, or even loads of different lip scrubs you can buy floating around that I don't want to fork out for. I then wacked some lip balm on and did the rest of my makeup so it had sunk into my lips (put it on before the lip balm has dried and you'll get a big tacky mess). This left them soft and smooth enough that the formula got on with them this time. So it's a product that requires a tad more preparation than most, so you need to set time aside for it. Definitely not a slap it on and go type of lippy.

The lip cream feels kind of odd on the lips, it is lightweight in that it doesn't feel like there's anything on your lips. It does dry your lips out a bit which I expect from a matte lip. But it doesn't feel cakey or thick on the lips, it's a feeling that requires a bit of getting used to. But I do find that I do love the finish of this.

Okay so moving onto application. Sleek claims that Matte Me glides on in one smooth application with no need for a second coat.
The applicator uses a doe foot applicator, which is what I was expecting, but for some reason the doe foot seems to be very rough (I feel like this may just be me) and the feeling I got was the same feeling as when I use lip pencils and when someone squeaks polystyrene. But I think this is something that would only affect me and no-one else will be bothered by this.
So the first fall down to Sleek's description of the product. This does not just glide on in one smooth application in any word.

Again, this is not a 'Ooooh let's wack that on today' product this is a 'Let's wear that tomorrow when I have lots of time to mess up and redo it all" product. Not only do you need to spend time prepping you lips, you need to be VERY careful when applying. This dries pretty quickly, and once it does, it's very hard to do a quick fix.
New lipstickers this isn't for you, you need to be fast with this one and have a wipe to hand (a tissue doesn't do squat against this). I prefer to apply it to the middle of my lips and then spread it out to the edges carefully so it's easier to be neat.
It definitely takes some practice and it isn't forgiving if you mess up.

The lasting power? Pretty darn good. When I first swatched this I couldn't for the life of me get it off, and when I did it just spread around my hand and sent my whole hand red. The photo above was 9 hours of wear no touch ups, with 2 meals and lots of coffees. It faded a lot around my mouthy bit as you can see, but thats the easiest area to touch up.  When it came to taking this off it was a bit of a faff. Like I said a tissue doesn't touch it. I ended up using Sainsbury's Baby Wipes (they take left over hair dye smudges off so if they didn't take this off I'd be scared). which took it off with most of the skin on my lips and left me with a pink toned chin. It also doesn't transfer, like at all. Go and kiss whoever you want and they won't have a tell tale red mouth and also no red transfer on glasses and mugs.

So what's my overall opinion of Sleek Matte Me Lip Cream? It's very mixed, there's pluses of this product such as the opaque and vivid colour and how it stains the lips. But it's also such a pain to prep for, apply and get off, you definitely need some patience, practice and time for this. The feel of it takes a bit of getting used to as well. I'm not sure I would recommend this to be honest. I love it in some ways but I really don't in others. I guess it depends what you're looking for in a product. If you want a quick, easy or subtle lip then stay far far away. If you want a punchy lip and you have some time to play with then go for it.
I'd be interested to know if any of you have tried this out and if you have thoughts on it?

    1. I know I wasn't expecting SUCH a vivid red, I would say it's even brighter than the photos show! I think it depends what you expect from it and how much patience you would have for it :) xx
